Day 1: Ha Giang to An Minh

The Ha Giang loop: a four-day road trip | Vietnam Tourism

Morning

Enjoy breakfast in Ha Giang City before departure. As you head north on QL4C, the landscape quickly turns into limestone mountains covered with jungle. You’ll quickly arrive at the Dong Van Stone Plateau, a UNESCO Global Geopark. The highlight of this journey is the Heaven’s Gate Pass, where you first experience exhilarating views and challenging twists and turns.

Leaving Heaven’s Gate Pass, you’ll reach Tam Son – a small town surrounded by strikingly wooded hills – just in time for lunch. The restaurants and roadside stalls here serve classic Northern Vietnamese dishes. As anywhere else in the country, good Vietnamese coffee is not hard to find.

Afternoon

After refueling, continue on Highway 4C towards Yen Minh. The road follows the beautiful Mien River and passes through a high gorge. Cruise through limestone plateaus and mountain passes before reaching Yen Minh, where you can rest at a local hotel for the evening.

Tip: When staying in smaller towns, it’s best to book a hotel or homestay in advance: the best accommodations fill up quickly, especially during the high season.

Day 2: Vietnam border

How hard is Ha Giang Loop?

Morning

Enjoy a bowl of hot pho for breakfast before hitting the road to Dong Van, heading northeast on QL4C. The road slopes rapidly above the trees, revealing an otherworldly landscape of eroded limestone karsts, with incredible views at every bend. Chin Khoang Slope (Nine Khuc Pass) is a great place to stop and admire the winding road down to the valley below. Stop at the Sa Phin area for food and gas.

Afternoon

A three-hour Loop will bring you to the Lung Cu flagpole. The 360-degree view of the Chinese border is well worth the effort. Returning to QL4C, you will have no shortage of beautiful landscapes on the way to Dong Van where you stay. Take time to visit local markets in the evening or early morning to see how colorful ethnic groups conduct their businesses.

Tip: Be sure to check with your host in East Van for your local market date and time. This is a cultural experience you shouldn’t miss.

Day 3: Dong Van, Ma Pi Leng Pass

Morning

Today, you will encounter the most interesting road in Vietnam. From Dong Van all the way to Ma Pi Leng Pass, the valley bottom is much lower as you pass through giant peaks and gorges. The only problem may be the number of times you have to stop, as every turn is filled with picturesque scenery.

Meo Vac is only 24 km from Dong Van, but it will take you most of the morning to get there if you stop for sightseeing along the way. Once there, enjoy this quaint town with its colorful character and many lunch options.

Afternoon

For a quick Loop, turn left onto NH4C at the end of Ma Pi Leng Pass onto Bypass 193A. It’s a short but enjoyable ride to get a close-up view of the Nho Que River meandering below.

You will end the day in Bao Lam, a small village with very friendly locals. Relax for a few hours in this remote setting and get ready for the morning drive back to Ha Giang.

Morning

Start the last day of the trip with a simple breakfast and stock up on food for the return trip to Ha Giang. From Bao Lam, follow Highway 34 to the southwest to Ha Giang. The road mostly runs along the Gam River and is fun to drive along the bottom of the valley. There will still be a lot of twists and turns and a few passes, but it won’t be as hard as before.

Stop in Bac Me and grab a bite at one of the local eateries. In the last stretch before reaching the cities, you will see even fewer towns.

Afternoon

After your trip for the past four days, head back to Ha Giang and enjoy some modern conveniences.
