There are two popular ways to reach Cat Ba Island from Ha Long Bay, including a ferry and bus
Halong to Cat Ba by ferry
Due to the short distance and short transportation time, most tourists reach Cat Ba Island from Ha Long Bay by ferry. In general, ferries have ample seating and food for a comfortable ride. It usually takes 40 to 50 minutes to reach the destination. Ferries depart daily from the Tuan Chau ferry terminal on Ngoc Chau Street, Tuan Chau district, Ha Long City.
From Tuan Chau ferry terminal to Gia Luong port (Cat Ba), there are 5-7 ferry trips every day. After arriving at Gia Luan port, you need to travel another 30 minutes using transportation to reach the center of Cat Ba island. From Hai Phong City, you can take a taxi or public bus to Got Wharf, 26 km (16m) away, then take a ferry to Cai Vieng Port on Cat Ba Island. About the public bus, you can take bus 16C Thinh Hung from Thuong Ly bus station to Got station (Cat Hai town) 20 times a day, from 6:00 am – 12:00 pm. The ticket price is only 15,000 VND / person/time.

When you arrive at Got Wharf, you can easily buy ferry tickets to Cai Vieng port (Cat Ba Island). Ferries run every 30 minutes from 5:30 am to 6:30 pm. From Cai Vieng port, it takes another 40 minutes to reach Cat Ba town. Some buses take you to the city center.

Hai Phong to Cat Ba by cable car
Taking the cable car from Cat Hai town (Hai Phong city) to Cat Ba island is probably the strangest form of transportation. In fact, with a length of 21 km (13 million km), the cable car system will be the longest and largest in the world when completed.
Currently, you can move from Hai Phong City to Cat Hai station in Cat Hai town, then buy a ticket (100,000 VND/per person/way) to take the Cat Hai – Phu Long cable car. The cable car system has 60 carriages, each car has a capacity of 30 guests and a transport capacity of 4,500 passengers/hour. The whole journey takes 15 minutes.
