Private Half-Day Hanoi City Tour: Mausoleum, Temple & Pagoda in Vietnam

Hanoi technically has two main seasons – the wet season (May to September) and the dry season (October to April) – although it does experience weather variations that can simulate four seasons. For the best weather, it’s best to visit Hanoi in spring (February to April) or autumn (October to November).

February to April: Spring is one of the best times to visit Hanoi. The weather is mild with temperatures between 15-20°C (59-68°F). The skies are clear from February to March, but it starts to drizzle frequently in April. Note that spring may also coincide with Tet, the Vietnamese New Year (late January or early February). This is the most important celebration in Vietnamese culture, so expect many establishments to be closed during this time.

May-August: Like the rest of Southeast Asia, summers in Hanoi are hot and humid. The average temperature is around 32°C (90°F). On top of that, it’s officially in the rainy season, with the heaviest rainfall in July-August.

September to November: Like spring, autumn is an ideal time to visit Hanoi. The weather is mild with average temperatures hovering around 25°C (77°F). November, when the skies get clearer and the leaves turn golden, is the perfect time to explore the tree-lined boulevards around Hoan Kiem Lake. Autumn is considered the most beautiful time to visit Hanoi.

December-January: Hanoi’s winters are said to be surprisingly cold for a Southeast Asian country. The average temperature is around 17°C (63°F) but has been known to drop below 10°C (50°F). High humidity, wind chill, and lack of building insulation make it look even colder. If you decide to visit Hanoi in winter, be sure to dress appropriately.

I’ve been to Hanoi twice – the first time in mid-April and most recently in early September. April didn’t rain at all, although I did experience periods of rain in September. April is a great time to visit, but I think November and March are even better.
